The team at James Street South are celebrating a clutch of industry wins after David Gillmore was named Best chef in Ulster at the Irish Restaurant Awards last night (Monday). The awards, which have been running for eight years, are widely acknowledged as the Irish hospitality industry Oscars.

This latest accolade comes just days after Bar + Grill chef Carl Johannssen was awarded the title of Restaurant Chef of the Year at the prestigious Janus Awards for the second year in a row.

The ceremony, which is the Institute of Hospitality’s Professionalism Awards, recognise excellence in the Industry across Northern Ireland. Gillian Wilson and her management team at Cast & Crew in the Titanic Quarter were commended, as were Michael Cole and staff at Hadski’s, while David Gillmore was highly commended as chef at James Street South.

Niall McKenna, owner of the James Street South Group, said:

“We are delighted to have David and Carl recognised by two of the most respected industry bodies in the land. The last 12 months have been fantastic for our restaurants and teams with numerous awards and accolades and these are all testament to the hard work and commitment from all our staff.

“We strive to provide locals and tourists alike with memorable, delicious and enjoyable experiences at all of our establishments, and recognition at this level can only serve to ensure our restaurants are top of the “to do” lists for anyone looking for great food every day in Belfast.”

2016 has been an incredible year for James Street South so far, with Niall and Joanne McKenna honoured at the recent Belfast Telegraph Awards for their contribution to hospitality and tourism here, and follow on from an incredible 12 months of success for the Group. In 2015, James Street South won both the Best Restaurant in Ireland at the Georgina Campbell Awards and the Best Restaurant in Northern Ireland by the Waitrose Good Food Guide.

With four of Belfast’s most popular restaurants and the acclaimed Cookery School, the James Street South Group is not one to rest on its laurels and there are exciting plans in motion for a new restaurant for Donegall Quay to open within the next 18 months.
