How Has Technology Changed the Way We Consume Entertainment?

We have officially transitioned into the digital era where everything in our lives revolves around technology. Now, it’s impossible to go through the day without using at least one gadget. Computers are essential for working; smartphones keep us connected; televisions provide entertainment. We’re going to be looking at the latter today, exploring how exactly technology changed how we consume entertainment. Join us on our journey through recent history and marvel over how the media has been revolutionised these past few years.

On-Demand Entertainment

People used to wait for their favourite shows to come onto television and channels would only show one or two episodes at a time. This is no longer the case. Now, consumers can access what they want, whenever they want (hence the phrase ‘on-demand’). This includes film, television and music. Technology has provided us with powerful platforms that serve as a database for all the media we could ever wish for. Typically, they are accessed through the internet or via digital download.

From Real to Virtual

In the past, we had to travel to land-based establishments for certain forms of entertainment, such as music shows or casino games. People also had to pull out the scrabble board if they wanted to play a game. Nowadays, everything has been transferred into a digital format. You can watch performers from your sitting room; you can play monopoly live game by going on the internet; you can even draw digital doodles using your tablet. Anything that can be converted by technology pretty much has been.

Interactivity with Others

Technology has contributed significantly to globalisation. Thanks to the internet, people from across the world are able to communicate with one another. As a result, multiplayer gaming has become a hugely popular form of entertainment in recent years. Strangers can either compete against one another or join forces in online video games, even if they are thousands of miles apart. Not having anyone to play with is now a thing of the past.

Live Streaming

Live streaming has been around for a while now, but this form of technology has become increasingly proficient over the past couple of years. It’s not just the big broadcasters who can live stream content now. Everyone can do it. This has opened new possibilities for entertainment. Celebrities can host live Q&As with their fans, whilst famous gamers post live streams of them playing competitive games. As such, pre-recorded content isn’t quite so dominant anymore.

Greater Selection

As we mentioned before, there are now digital platforms that offer a huge library of films, television series and music (think Spotify and Netflix). Technology has also made it easier for everyone to create entertainment. As a result, there is a greater selection than ever before, as content is constantly being churned out. Algorithms have also been developed, so this content is filtered and tailored to each individual.

Technology has completely changed the way we consume entertainment, making everything bigger, better and more accessible.
