The Belfast Giants lit up The SSE Arena on Saturday night with a commanding 8-0 Challenge Cup victory over the Fife Flyers, securing their first home win of the season in emphatic style.

First Period – Giants Set the Tone

From the opening face-off, Adam Keefe’s men looked determined to put on a show for the home crowd. Early pressure came from the Giants’ blue line, with Mike Lee and Bo Hanson peppering Flyers goaltender Shane Owen. Forwards Marcus Eriksson and Patrick Grasso also tested the visiting net, while at the other end, Andrew McLean flashed a shot just wide.

The breakthrough came at 05:58, when excellent work behind the net from Gabe Bast and Jordan Kawaguchi teed up Grasso to slot home the opener (1-0). Moments later, with Johan Porsberger in the box for slashing, Lee unleashed a rocket from the blue line that flew through traffic and into the net for the Giants’ second (2-0).

The Flyers pressed late in the period, forcing a strong stop from Jackson Whistle, but Belfast held their two-goal cushion heading into the first break.

Second Period – The Floodgates Open

The Flyers returned with more energy, but Whistle was equal to everything they threw at him, including a superb diving save to deny Mason Alderson. The Giants quickly turned defence into attack, and once JJ Piccinich squeezed a shot past Owen from a tight angle (3-0), the dam burst.

Jake Gaudet extended the lead with a composed finish set up by Grasso (4-0), before Kawaguchi pounced on a rebound to make it five (5-0). Just seconds later, Grasso bagged his second of the night (6-0), leaving Fife reeling as the Giants dominated both ends of the ice.

Third Period – A Hat-Trick Hero and a Shut-Out

The Giants showed no mercy in the final frame. On a carryover power play, Kawaguchi fired high into the net for his second (7-0), before Grasso completed his hat-trick with a close-range finish to send the Arena into raptures (8-0).

Despite a string of penalties, Belfast stayed disciplined defensively, with Whistle standing tall to secure his first shutout of the campaign.

What’s Next

The Giants quickly return to action with a trip to face the Dundee Stars on Sunday night. Home fans can catch them back at The SSE Arena on Saturday, 27th September, when the Glasgow Clan roll into town for their first meeting of the season.
