Giants Strike First In Game One Of Weekend Double

The Stena Line Belfast Giants tallied 2 valuable Elite League points with a 5-3 victory over the Sheffield Steelers at the Odyssey Arena in the first game of this weekends double header. The win clawed back points on the table topping Steelers who took an early 2 goals lead which they held going into the first intermission.
A gutsy team performance from the Giants seen five different goal scorers with Evan Cheverie, Cody Brookwell, Calvin Elfring, Robby Sandrock and Craig Peacock all featuring in the score column of the game sheet.
The game got off to a quick start with Dustin Kohn opening up the scoring for the visitors at just 2:33 on the powerplay. In a period that certainly didn’t lack physicality, with both teams amassing 26 minutes of penalties between them, Adam Keefe dropped the gloves with Danny Bois after what looked like a Bois hit at the other end of the ice.
The Steelers furthered their lead at 11:07 from Jonathan Phillips. The biggest chance of the 20 minutes for the home team was a penalty shot awarded to Craig Peacock at 12:03 but unfortunately Doyle closed the door just in time to deny him.

The second period continued much the same until the Giants finally broke down Doyle with a powerplay goal from Evan Cheverie at 29:44. The Giants then got their equaliser from a stunning Cody Brookwell slapshot at 38:50.
The two sides clashed again just before the second intermission, this time with Calvin Elfring taking on Colton Fretter.

The third period was end-to-end action but at 48:10 Man of the Match Elfring fired home on the powerplay to give the Giants the lead for the first time in the game. Just over five minutes later, Robby Sandrock struck with a signature slapshot to extend the home team’s lead to 4-2. However, Sheffield weren’t quite finished scoring and O’Connor added one soon after. Though it was Craig Peacock who sealed the Giants’ victory when Doyle was pulled and he scored an empty net goal from the defensive zone to claim a famous win in front of over 5,000 at the Odyssey Arena.
Next up for the Giants is round two of the weekend double header in Belfast on Saturday against the Sheffield Steelers. Face-Off is 7pmat the Odyssey Arena.
