The Stena Line Belfast Giants gave the ideal response to Friday’s opening night loss in Dundee with a comprehensive 5-3 win in Edinburgh against the Capitals in Challenge Cup Group A. The visitors dominated the game, outshooting their opponents 41-30, with the Capitals scoring all their goals in the final period in what was too late for a comeback.
Following Friday’s disappointing 3-0 defeat in Dundee – the Giants began the game in Edinburgh with aggression and, after a few near misses, Jonathan Boxill opened the scoring at 5:48, slotting the puck home, past former Giants goalie Carsen Chubak, assisted by Adam Keefe and Jeff Mason, to leave the Giants 1-0 ahead after the opening period.
Early in the second period James Wallace took a Cross Checking penalty and, with the Giants on the powerplay, Mike Forney took advantage, tipping in a Johan Ejdepalm one-timer at 23:20. Forney made it 3-0 with 14 seconds of the second period remaining, assisted by Walser and Higgins as the Giants stretched their comfortable lead again.
Player/Coach Derrick Walser posted his third assist of the game at 47:12 with Colin Shields the man to finish off the move to leave the visitors 4-0 ahead.
However the Giants took their foot off the gas and allowed the home side to claw their way back into the game. Ryan Hayes scored his side’s opening goal at 50:10 on the powerplay with Adam Keefe sitting out two minutes for slashing, assisted by Nate Fleming and Assistant Captain Jacob Johnston.
Giants Defenceman Jeff Mason restored his team’s four goal lead at 53:20 while shorthanded, assisted by Mark Garside and Colin Shields.
However it was that man Hayes and Johnston who teamed up again at 53:48 for another Capitals powerplay goal as Matt Nickeron sat in the penalty box for a Cross Checking penalty.
The home side continued their late revival with Taylor Dickin scoring his first of the season at 55:27 to make the scoreline 5-3. Despite pulling Carsen Chubak in the last minute, the Capitals coud not find another goal and the Giants skated out of Edinburgh with their first two points of the season.
The Giants opening home game of the season is against the Manchester Storm on Saturday 12th September at The SSE Arena, Belfast – face-off 7pm. Good seats are available online via Ticketmaster or from the Arena Box Office in person or by calling (028) 9073 9074.
