The Stena Line Belfast Giants were left heartbroken in Coventry as a Russ Cowley game winning goal at 59:57 for the Blaze made sure the visitors returned to Northern Ireland empty handed for the second time in as many nights in England.

The Giants lined up with Kevin Westgarth and Mike Kompon, who both returned following one game suspensions. Cody Brookwell and Mark McCutcheon were both healthy scratches with Stephen Murphy still missing through injury.

Sunday’s first period was almost a carbon copy of Saturday’s, with four goals scored leaving the two sides tied at 2-2 following 20 minutes of play.

It was the Blaze who got the ‘go ahead’ goal, with Jakub Sindel poking the puck in from close range after only 1:41. However, the Giants were back on level terms after 5:29, with Colin Shields ripping home a fine writer from the top of the face-off circle after a nice pass from behind the net by Davey Phillips.

It was then the visitors turn to take the lead, as Ray Sawada scored his second in as many nights against the Blaze, finishing from close range at 12:28 while on the powerplay.

However, the Giants joy was short lived, as Derek Lee took a pass from Ross Venus, pulled a move and slotted the puck past Carsen Chubak at 14:33 to leave this Elite League clash tied after the first period.

The home side stepped it up in the second period & outshot the Giants 13-9 with both Brian Stewart and Carsen Chubak called into action in their respective goals. Neither side could find a breakthrough during the second period and the game remained level going into the final period.

The final 20 minutes were nail biting – with end to end action throughout, indeed, the Giants outshot their hosts 11-9. However, with the game looking destined to go to overtime, Russ Cowley broke forward into the Giants zone and sent an unstoppable wrist shot past Carsen Chubak and into the net with only three seconds remaining on the clock to win the game.

The Giants return to action with back-to-back games in Belfast next Saturday AND Sunday. First up is Saturday’s clash with the Edinburgh Capitals at 7pm, followed by a 4pm face-off on Sunday against the Sheffield Steelers.
