Edinburgh Capitals 2-5 Stena Line Belfast Giants

The Stena Line Belfast Giants won 5-2 in Edinburgh on Sunday evening to make it three Elite League wins in three days. Following wins in Belfast on Friday and Saturday against the Coventry Blaze, the defending Elite League champions dominated proceedings on Sundayagainst the Capitals to complete a successful ‘triple header’ weekend and remain in 3rd position in the Elite League standings, 6 points off 1st place.

Kevin Westgarth struck the Giants opening goal and his first of three on the night with 40 seconds remaining in the first period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the end of the opening 20 minutes.

In the second period, two Evan Cheverie strikes either side of a Richard Hartmann goal extended the Giants lead to 3-1. Then Westgarth added his second and Belfast’s fourth goal at 35:38 for a 4-1 advantage at the end of 40 minutes.

Daniel Naslund pulled one back for the ‘Caps’ at 46:12 to give hope to the hosts and their fans. However, Kevin Westgarth extinguished those hopes only 16 seconds later, completing his hattrick and a comprehensive 5-2 Giants win in Edinburgh.

The Giants next home game is against the Braehead Clan on Saturday 27th December. Face-Off is 7pm at the Odyssey Arena when the second and third placed teams in the Elite League will go head-to-head.
