Winter is rolling in thick and fast – and after a tumultuous year, we’re only just getting back on top of our homes. Some may still be a mess from the sudden transition to working from home, and some may only just be recovering from having everyone in at once. But with the price of homeware and furniture on the up, refreshing your home looks like it could be a little too expensive – unless you do it yourself! Here are four simple ideas for revitalising your home in time for winter, which are so easy you can do them yourself!
Update Your Furniture, DIY Style
An afternoon with your furniture and some DIY nous could re-vamp your home’s entire feel, ahead of the winter months. Cheap wooden dining sets are particularly easy to re-paint – a cost-effective way to create a new dynamic with the same furniture. The less precious you are about the item, the better; this gives you a chance to get truly creative with your belongings. Take a chest of drawers, for example. It might be looking a bit sad, and in need of a refresh – but you don’t have to just paint the whole thing one colour. Experiment! Paint patterns onto the sides, and paint the drawers in different colours. Create a two-tone wardrobe by painting the body white and the doors duck-egg. Mix and match your dining chairs with a palette of colours. Anything is possible!
Re-Invigorate Your Kitchen
You don’t need to completely rip out your kitchen in order to give it a new breath of life. Think about replacing one aspect, whether your worktops or your cabinet sets. You could even swap out your kitchen island for a cosier kind, with corresponding barstools to match. For inspiration, or even for units themselves, find your nearest kitchen showroom and take a look around. Keep an eye out specifically for natural wood flavours, to give your kitchen a homely feel as things get colder. Alternatively, lean into winter with colder colours, from brilliant white to winter-sky blues.
Spice Up Your Ceiling Line
Adding your own cornice moulding to your interior walls can be transformative to the vibe of your home. Doing away with boxy rooms and dark corners, coving frames your living spaces, and the different designs available make it really easy to customise your space to suit your decorative style. You could go more ornate in keeping with a traditional home design, or go for a blocky ceiling-frame style for more contemporary aesthetics. You can even spruce up your new coving with the addition of hidden LED down-lighting, to subtly light your space and accentuate your walls in one.
Re-Upholster Your Headboard
If you want to wake up to that new-home feeling, look no further than bringing DIY to your bed. Many beds have fabric headboards, which can not only get worn over time, but also boring. It is easy enough to remove this fabric – it is often simply stapled on behind the headboard – making replacing it even easier. Pick out a fabric of your choice; perhaps something fuzzier, or with a thicker shag, to trap head from your back and head more effectively. It is then as simple as measuring to size (including an extra 20 cm around each edge) and stapling to fit. While you’re here, you can also replace – or even introduce – padding, making for an especially comfortable bed in time for winter.
Make it look comfy
There is no denying that hoarder cleaning and straight lines look appealing and more dramatic.Keeping house clean can lift the mood and make the space look more comfortable and safe.
