Fife Flyers beat the Belfast Giants 3-2 in a shootout at Fife Ice Arena tonight (Sunday 1 November), and the extra point means the Flyers finish second in the Challenge Cup group.
The result changes nothing for Belfast. Adam Keefe’s side had already won the group and booked their semi-final place before the puck dropped in Kirkcaldy. For Fife, though, it was the point they needed, and they got it the hard way.
How it happened
Jordan Kawaguchi gave the Giants the lead in the first period, but Cameron Hough levelled with just four seconds left before the first break, so it was 1-1 at the end of the opening 20 minutes.
Belfast went back in front in the second when Jake Gaudet tipped one home on the powerplay, and they carried that 2-1 lead into the final period. Hough struck again in the third to make it 2-2, and that’s how it stayed through regulation and overtime. Fife then took the shootout to win the game.
It’s the second time this autumn the Giants have lost in Kirkcaldy, after Fife’s 3-2 win there in October. Read our report from that game. In between, Belfast won in Cardiff and beat Nottingham 6-1.
What’s next for the Giants
The Giants are back at The O2 Belfast next weekend for two games against Guildford Flames, on Saturday 7 November (7pm) and Sunday 8 November (5pm). Our November guide has every game and ticket link.
