The Stena Line Belfast Giants lost out 5-2 to the Fife Flyers away on Sunday in Challenge Cup Group A. Following Saturday’s 7-2 Giants win in Belfast – the Flyers were impressive on home ice to draw level with the Giants on four points, tied for second place in Group A.
Shane Owen started in the Belfast net with the Giants missing Brian Ward. Goals from Matt Pelech and Jean Dupuy were not enough for the Giants to claim their first domestic away win of the season.
Giants Fight Back In Fife
The home side struck first in Fife – Jonas Emmerdahl with the go-ahead goal for the Flyers on the powerplay at 6:33, assisted by Carlo Finucci.
However the Giants hit back at 12:41 through Captain Matt Pelech, whose solo effort brought the visitors level after a period of sustained pressure on the Fife goal.
Belfast took a well earned lead at 18:43 with another unassisted goal – this time it was Jean Dupuy on hand to make it two goals in as many nights with a cool finish.
Flyers Leave It All To Play For In Third
The Flyers punished the Giants shortly after the midway point in the game – with a 5-on-3 expiring, Kyle Just shot home the equaliser for the home side’s second powerplay goal of the game at 33:19.
Flyers Take Control
The Flyers landed the first blow in the final period when Dylan Qualie finished well from Danick Gauthier’s pass at 44:54 to regain the lead for the hosts.
Tim Crowder found space at the back post to give the hosts a two goal advantage with 3:17 to go. Crowder made sure of the home win in the final minute with an empty net finish to overturn Saturday’s defeat in Belfast.
