With the global thirst for Prosecco showing no sign of slowing, stocks of the Italian sparkler could dry up by the summer one leading producer has warned.
Sherril Soliman, exporter of GreatVine Prosecco said: “Last year’s harvest was very poor, and down by up to 50% in some parts, so there is a very real possibility of a global shortage.”
In recent years we have taken more than a simple fancy to prosecco. We guzzle the stuff by the bucket load!
Sales of prosecco were up by a staggering 75 per cent in the UK last year. We spent a whole £1 billion on the Italian fizz, and for the first time it overtook sales of Champagne. The UK buys more of it than even Italy does.
“Because there is such a demand for Prosecco, the négociants are releasing it onto the market slowly and are taking it as an opportunity to put prices up, in some cases by 50%.”
Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine named for the village near Triest where the Glera grape used to make it may have orginated.
