Edinburgh Capitalise On Giants In Belfast
The Stena Line Belfast Giants returned to home ice on Saturday night to face the Edinburgh Capitals. However, despite a standout performance from new signing Nathan Robinson, including two goals to his name, the home side found the going tough against the Scottish outfit. Mark Garside also struck twice throughout the game but with three from Rene Jarolin and one apiece for Naslund, Collins and Hartmann the home team faced an uphill battle for most of the game.
It was the Giants who struck first on the night with Nathan Robinson getting his first goal as a Belfast Giant at 7:01. However, Rene Jarolin struck twice before the end of the period to put the Capitals ahead going into the first intermission.
The second period was a mixed bag for the home team with Daniel Naslund adding to their misery at just 22:05 when he beat Chubak top shelf. Pressure was piled on both keepers but it wasn’t until 30:29 when Mark Garside reduced the deficit to just one goal.
The Capitals responded on the powerplay when Robinson was sent to the penalty box for a hooking minor with a goal from Greg Collins. Chubak faced plenty of shots in the middle frame but the score was kept at 2-4.
It took a while for any breakthroughs in the final twenty minutes but eventually at 49:28 Robinson struck his second slapshot of the night to make it 3-4. The Giants kept testing Hiadlovsky but it wasn’t to be and at 58:42 Richard Hartmann danced through the defence to surely seal the victory. However, Rene Jarolin finished it off with an empty net goal at 59:41 to ensure the visitors the win, despite Garside’s response at 59:59.
