Local businessman, Tom Smyth, owner of leading serviced apartment provider, Dream Apartments, has donated and delivered over £1k of toys to the Children’s Cancer Unit Charityat the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Belfast.
Tom operates and runs over 300 serviced apartments world-widethrough his multi-award winning business, Dream Apartments, and has donated a total of £12K to the charity throughout 2019.
Tom explains: “I have really enjoyed my time working with the Children’s Cancer Unit and it means so much to me personally tobe able to bring a little happiness to these children and their families at Christmas at the hardest time of their lives.
“As a father of two, I wanted to give something back and to do my bit to contribute to a charity that does so much vital work and who rely 100 per cent on donations from the public.
“During my visit in 2018 to the unit I was shocked to learn that the charity don’t get any funding whatsoever from local government, they rely solely on donations. I made it my pledge to donate what I could to the charity throughout 2019, and I will continue to do so for 2020.
“I would like to make a fresh appeal to our local decision makers to take notice of the work of these fantastic people who work so hard on behalf of these children and their families, and to make urgent grant money available.”
Tom concluded: “I will continue to work alongside the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity to help put them on the radar of our local MLAs and MPs and to donate much-needed funds.”
The Children’s Cancer Unit Charity exists solely to support the work of the Children’s Cancer and Haematology Unit at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and their families.
The toys and presents donated by Dream Apartments will be distributed to the children who are spending the Christmas period in hospital whilst fighting cancer.
Speaking about the donation, Jacqueline Wilkinson, from the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity said: “For the second consecutive year, the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity would like to thank Tom and Dream Apartments for their generous support over the past 12 months.
“For any child, their parents and wider family circle, spending time in hospital at Christmas time is very hard, but Tom’s donation of fantastic toys helps to bring joy to the children and to take their mind of the circumstances. Their little faces come to life when they receive their gift.
Jacqueline concluded: “We truly appreciate all the support we can get fromorganisations like Dream Apartments and business people like Tom who help us to support the work of our incredible medical team who deliver the highest quality of care to our young patients.”
