Devils Up By A Goal In Challenge Cup Quarter Final

The Stena Line Belfast Giants battled back from 4-1 down, scoring twice in the final period to narrow the deficit to just one goal in the two leg Elite League Challenge Cup Quarter Final.

After a scoreless first period the game came alive just after the mid way point with Joey Haddad netting a powerplay goal for the visitors to open the scoring. Colin Shields got the Giants back on level terms with his first of the evening just a minute later, taking advantage of a breakaway opportunity and neatly slotting the puck past Ben Bowns in the Cardiff goal. However, both Andrew Lord and Jake Morissette scored for the visitors to ensure they led 3-1 going into the second intermission.

Penalty trouble for the Devils in the final period paved a way back for the Giants who took full advantage. Mike Kompon smashed home his 9th powerplay goal of the season before Colin Shields added his second of the night with a bullet snapshot that found the top corner.

A 5 minute spearing penalty assessed to Doug Clarkson at 36:20 give the Giants a powerplay opportunity for the remainder of the game, but despite numerous chances Bowns and the Cardiff defence held firm carrying a slender one goal advantage into the second leg in Cardiff on Wednesday 14th January.
