Airport’s Community Fund helps local organisations create new garden

The George Best Belfast City Airport Community Fund has provided financial support to two south Belfast-based community groups for a new conservation project.

Lagan Village Youth and Community Group joined with the Orchardville Society to create an outdoor garden which was officially opened at a special event hosted by both groups at the Lagan Village Youth and Community centre in the Ravenhill area recently.

The aim of the initiative was to provide a facility that would give Orchardville Society members the opportunity to work outdoors and learn the skills required to build and maintain a conservation area.

The Lagan Village Youth and Community Group has a strong presence in the local area, providing a wide range of advice talks, health initiatives, classes, clubs and groups for people of all ages. The Orchardville Society works with people with learning disabilities to help them achieve their ambitions.

George Newell, Community Development Officer at Lagan Village Youth and Community Group, said:

“Over the last year, Lagan Village Youth and Community Group has worked directly with the Orchardville Society on our conservation project. The group has really come together and worked to create a fantastic shared space for all the community to enjoy.

“It’s great to have the support of Belfast City Airport, whose funding has helped facilitate the running of the project, buy essential supplies and provide our volunteers with the necessary equipment. On behalf of everyone involved in the project we would like to thank the airport for its help and dedication.”

Through its Community Fund, Belfast City Airport has donated more than £350,000 to over 120 local projects and groups since its inception in 2009.

Laura Duggan, Environmental Manager at Belfast City Airport, attended the opening and said:

“Belfast City Airport is thrilled to have been able to support two such worthwhile charities with this fantastic project which will provide a welcoming shared space for the local community to enjoy. It was fantastic to be able to attend the official opening and congratulate all of the young people involved.

“At the airport, we have a dedicated Community Commitment Plan which aims to enrich and support our local community, protect our environment, invest in our people, and help young people realise their aspirations and potential through education.

“Through our Community Fund, we can develop meaningful relationships with our neighbours by supporting local environmental, arts, sports and educational projects.”
