For ten years now the walled garden at Springhill, which is cared for by the National Trust,  has been a community led escape from the day-to-day stress and struggles of modern life. The ethos of the allotments is that of well-being, friendship and enrichment, with many local families growing up amongst its fresh garden fayre.

In spring 2009, Springhill’s plots were pegged out, 15 plots all 12ft x 8ft. Within 3 weeks the plots had all been taken and the Community Allotment family had been born. Within the first year the ‘allotmenteers’ had made significant improvements to the site. They had a composting area, communal facilities, picnic table, summer house, seed swap station, herb garden and a polytunnel. Since then the allotments have grown to 27 plots, plus there’s a waiting list of prospective growers keen to share in the fun.

The families and personalities have brought life back into the Walled Garden. On the Open Day, come and meet them, they are a fantastic group who have built firm friendships around the allotments and are willing to share their growing top tips.

Enjoy live music from local musician, Ryan McGarrity throughout the afternoon in the allotments. Little ones can enjoy taking part in a potting station where they can take home a little piece of Springhill. See the estate in a new light by joining our Assistant Ranger Maureen Graham on a gardening for wildlife tour. Warren Marten, Gardener at Springhill will also be running workshops in the allotments.

The spring colours are a beautiful sight at Springhill. After exploring the Community Allotments, investigate the walks and natural play areas. Book a guided house tour and discover the perfect read in the Well Read Book Shop.

Relax in the Barn Café with a homemade scone, a warming speciality coffee or tea and check out the allotment inspired dishes of the day. There’s no need for stress about a last minute Mother’s Day gift as we have that sorted too! The Springhill Shop has a gorgeous range of gifts, perfect to make mum feel very special on the big day.

Come along and join us in celebrating 10 years of Springhill’s Community Allotments on Saturday 30 March, 11am – 4pm, with a fun-filled day within the Walled Garden. The Estate Team and all the ‘Allotmenteers’ would love to meet you!

The first 50 visitors to enter the allotments will receive a complimentary mocktail.
