First certified renewable BioLPG can cut carbon emissions by up to 90%
Calor Gas, Northern Ireland’s longest established supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has today (Thursday 12 April 2018) launched Northern Ireland’s first certified renewable LPG for homes and businesses. The breakthrough product is certified as offering up to 90% lower emissions than fossil fuels.
Whereas traditional LPG is made as a by-product of coal and oil extraction, the new Calor BioLPG or BioPropane is made from renewable feedstocks, recycled waste materials and sustainably sourced renewable vegetable oils, which would have otherwise been discarded.
The new green energy – Calor BioLPG, will be available across Northern Ireland from this week. It works in exactly the same way as conventional LPG products, enabling both domestic and business customers to make the switch immediately, using exactly the same boilers and equipment, vehicles such as forklifts and appliances such as cookers, heaters and driers. These will operate on BioLPG in the same way, with the same energy output, but with a dramatically reduced carbon footprint.
BioLPG is one of the lowest-polluting energy sources in the world today. With heavy EU fines on the horizon for failing to meet Renewable Heat and emissions targets by 2020, there remains a significant imperative for Northern Ireland businesses to focus on switching to renewable, lower carbon energy sources.
A recent survey by Lucid Talk showed that 80% of businesses in Northern Ireland are open to switching to renewable energy, with the added benefit of achieving increasingly important “green” business accreditation.
Calor Gas is part of SHV Energy, which has an ongoing commitment to reduce carbon emissions and the ambition for 100% of its energy products to be from renewable sources by 2040. In Northern Ireland it is aiming to switch 10% of its sales to BioLPG in the next three years.
Launching Calor BioLPG, CEO Gino Vansteenhuyse said,
“Because Calor gas is supplied into on-site bulk storage tanks rather than on a pipeline network, it has a unique foothold in harder-to-reach rural parts of Northern Ireland, with particular strength in the agri-food sector, hospitality, logistics and rural industrial applications.
“For the first time, businesses and homes in Northern Ireland will be able to choose a renewable gas. This exciting new development will enable customers to dramatically improve their carbon footprint. They will be able to make a cleaner, more sustainable choice.
“The biggest environmental gain from the use of this very low carbon, clean fuel is when it replaces fossil fuels. Traditional LPG offers a CO2 reduction of up to 16% when compared to oil products. A switch to BioLPG can cut this by as much as 90%.
“By helping thousands of customers in Northern Ireland to make a small change, we can make a big change for the environment.”
