A Junior Doctor from Belfast has revealed how his own gym played a major part in his life when the whole of the country went into lockdown.

Daire Rooney, 25, who works at the Ulster Hospital, was at the frontline when COVID swept the nation.

Working long hours while understaffed and unable to see friends and family resulted in high stress levels for Rooney.

Having always been a fan of fitness, playing competitive football for a team in Ireland from an early age and exploring strength and rehabilitation exercises after an injury, staying active has played an important role in Rooney’s life.]

Rooney explained: “Staying active really helps me release stress and stay positive during tough times, which is needed during my line of work.

“You can almost call it my own life line.”

When the lockdown hit and gyms closed, it became almost impossible for him to stay on top of his fitness regime and his life line was cut.

It didn’t take long for Rooney to start thinking of ways of how he could get his daily exercise in. Over a few short months he built his own gym using a range of products from leading gym equipment specialists, BLK BOX.

Talking about his decision to build his home gym, Rooney says; “When it was announced that gyms would close during the pandemic, I was gutted. Exercise provides me with an outlet for dealing with the stresses of being a frontline worker, even without a pandemic, but particularly given the difficult times we’re living through

“I couldn’t just sit around and decided to convert my garage to a home gym. During the past year this room has been my saviour.

“After a tough shift, where I’m seeing first hand the impact this virus is having on people’s lives, I can shut the door, put on my music and escape the everyday stresses I’m experiencing every day.”

His dedication for staying active has resulted in Rooney being able to practice new moves and he can now perform an Olympic deadlift with a weight of 220kg

It was also for this reason that BLK BOX decided to choose him to be its own ‘Product Tester’ – part of the brands own ‘Anyone Can’ campaign, which is encouraging people to stay active. The gym equipment  specialists were looking for one product tester to test a bundle of products and provide honest feedback to its team of developers.

Discussing its choice, Catherine McLaughlin, Marketing Manager, said: “Rooney was a very worthy winner. Not only did he impress us with his passion for fitness but his ‘can do’ attitude and his experience on the frontline during this pandemic made him the obvious choice for us.

“We look forward to having him on the team and working together to ensure our products are meeting our customer expectations.”
