The Stena Line Belfast Giants played the perfect road game to defeat the Sheffield Steelers 2-0 on Sunday. Colin Shields’ strike at the midway point was the game winning goal in a second weekend win over the Steelers. Darcy Murphy’s empty net finish secured the two Elite League points in Sheffield.

The Steelers came up against an impressive Stephen Murphy in the Giants net as well as a resilient Belfast defence with the visitors relentless all game long and were well worth their win.

Scoreless in Sheffield

The opening 20 minutes of action in Sheffield were end-to-end with both goalies, Murphy for Belfast and Sheffield’s Mustukovs, needed to keep the game scoreless. The Giants outshot their hosts 7-6 and could count themselves unlucky not to be in front with both John Kurtz and Cole Jarrett going close.

Giants Under Pressure With Penalties

With Stephen Murphy in inspired form, the Giants looked comfortable in handling the Steelers going forward on their home ice. However the visitors ran into penalty trouble, giving the home side six powerplay attempts during the middle period. Although the Giants will point to being given penalties while trying to protect their netminder as both Roy and Nelson ran into Murphy.

Shields Magic Puts Giants Ahead

Colin Shields, the Giants all-time leading goalscorer, added to his tally at 27:43 when he skilfully picked the puck out of the air and into the Steelers net to give the Giants an important lead.

Giants Kill Off Steelers

Coach Keefe would have asked for the ‘same again’ from his team in the final period and the Giants did just that. With more penalties at the beginning of the 3rd the Giants, backstopped superbly by Stephen Murphy, again shut down the hosts and kept the Steelers from equalising.

Whistle Closes Out Steelers

The Steelers again put physical pressure on Stephen Murphy and the Giants netmindner was forced off at 6:38 through injury. Steeler Colton Fretter was given a game misconduct by Referee Hogarth following the incident at the Giants goal. However Whistle’s 6:38 in net were eventful as he produced a string of late saves to close out the game and give Belfast an important shutout on the road.

Final Score:
Sheffield Steelers 0-2 Stena Line Belfast Giants

Giants Man of the Match:
#19 Colin Shields
