The Stena Line Belfast Giants returned to first place in the Elite League standings with a shootout win following a 1-1 game on the road against the Manchester Storm. In a hard fought affair, it was the Giants who who took the two points on offer with Mike Radja shootout goal and saw them leapfrog both Cardiff and Nottingham into top spot.
The Giants got off to a good start – putting early pressure onto the Manchester Storm. Although, after 3:51, Richards Birzinsh opened the scoring with his first goal of the season to put the home side ahead. The Giants outshot the Manchester Storm in the opening period, however could not find an opening goal as the period ended with the home side ahead.
With only 41 seconds of the second period gone, the Giants levelled things up as all-time leading scorer Colin Shields fired home while on the powerplay taking advantage of Zane Kalemba’s Delay of Game penalty.
The third and final period was end-to-end with both Stephen Murphy in the Giants net and Zane Kalemba being called into action. After 65 minutes of play, including 5 overtime minutes, both teams could not be separated and the game went to a shootout.
Indeed, the teams went the distance – with Stephen Murphy starring in nine rounds of the shootout before Mike Radja found a way past Zane Kalemba to give the Giants an important away win.
