Dominant Belfast Giants Claim 4-1 Home Win Over Sheffield Steelers

The Stena Line Belfast Giants moved level on points with Elite League leading Cardiff Devils thanks to a 4-1 win against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday night at The SSE Arena, Belfast. With only 14 skaters – the Giants took the game to the Steelers and earned an important win in front of 4,500 home fans.

Mitch Ganzak gave the home side an early lead – scoring after only 1:59, assisted by Colin Shields and Derrick Walser. Those two would go on to provide assists for the second goal of the game – this time it was Mark Garside who found the net, firing home while on the powerplay at 5:30.

Although after only 7:33, it was 2-1 with Mathieu Roy pulling one back for the Steelers. The Giants all-time leading scorer Colin Shields scored his fifth goal of the season at 14:23, assisted by James Desmarais, to give the hosts a deserved 3-1 lead at the end of the first period.
Jonathan Boxill extended the Giants lead to 4-1 at 50:03 after an impressive solo finish past Tyler Plante in the Sheffield goal to round off an dominant win by the Belfast side on Saturday.

The Giants return to action on Sunday with a game on the road in Dundee – face-off 6:30pm, where a win could see them leapfrog Cardiff into first place outright.
