Belfast Giants opened their competitive 2026/27 campaign in winning fashion on Saturday night, producing a confident performance to defeat Dundee Stars 4-1 in the Challenge Cup.
Adam Keefe’s side travelled to Tayside looking to turn their pre-season preparations into competitive momentum, and the Giants wasted little time making their intentions clear.
Goals from Nicolas Guay, Mason Klee, Patrick Guay and Scott Conway secured an impressive opening-night victory, with Jackson Whistle providing a dependable presence between the pipes.
Giants make a flying start
Belfast were on the front foot from the opening exchanges, with Scott Conway and JJ Piccinich among those causing problems around the Dundee net.
The Giants thought they had made the perfect start when Ciaran Long redirected a Mike Lee effort into the net, but the goal was ruled out after the puck was adjudged to have struck Long’s glove.
The breakthrough wasn’t delayed for long.
With 10:31 on the clock, Nicolas Guay reacted quickest after Dundee netminder Vladislav Pestov saved Lee’s initial effort, sweeping home the rebound to give Belfast a deserved 1-0 advantage.
Then came one of the moments of the night.
Making his Giants debut, Mason Klee opened his Belfast account in spectacular fashion, unleashing a superb shot from the blue line that flew into the roof of the net at 14:15.
Dundee Stars 0-2 Belfast Giants.
Piccinich almost added another during a Giants powerplay, striking the post before being denied by Pestov as Belfast threatened to take complete control before the first intermission.
Guay brothers combine for number three
Dundee attempted to respond after the restart, but the Giants continued creating opportunities and eventually extended their advantage midway through the second period.
Nicolas Guay was initially denied by Pestov, but brother Patrick Guay was perfectly positioned to put away the rebound at 30:04.
It was a family combination that gave Belfast a commanding 3-0 lead.
Dundee refused to disappear, however, and their persistence was rewarded late in the period. Keaton Jameson produced a clever deflection from Brodi Stuart’s effort at 38:04, leaving Whistle wrong-footed and reducing Belfast’s advantage to 3-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Conway puts the result beyond doubt
The Stars began the third with their first powerplay of the evening following a high-sticking penalty against Long, but Belfast’s penalty kill stood firm.
In fact, it was the Giants who nearly scored short-handed when Logan Cockerill broke clear, only for Pestov to make the save.
With Dundee needing a route back into the contest, Belfast managed the closing stages effectively.
The decisive fourth arrived at 51:45.
Cole Shudra’s effort was blocked, but the loose puck fell kindly for Scott Conway, who made no mistake with the net exposed to restore Belfast’s three-goal advantage.
Dundee searched for a late response, while Kaleb Pearson rattled the crossbar at the other end in the dying seconds.
The final buzzer confirmed it:
Dundee Stars 1-4 Belfast Giants
A controlled away performance, four different goalscorers and, most importantly, a winning start to competitive action.
A promising opening statement
There will be tougher tests ahead and it is still extremely early in the campaign, but there was plenty for Keefe to like about this performance.
Belfast carried an attacking threat throughout, received goals from different areas of the roster and looked capable of creating chances even when playing short-handed.
Klee opening his account on debut is another positive, while the Guay brothers both finding the scoresheet gives the Giants an encouraging platform as the new season begins to gather pace.
You can’t ask for much more from game one.
Next up: Glasgow Clan
There’s little time for the Giants to celebrate.
Belfast remain in Scotland and head to Braehead Arena on Sunday 13 September to face Glasgow Clan as their Challenge Cup campaign continues.
Then comes the one Giants supporters have been waiting for.
Competitive hockey returns to The O2 Belfast on Saturday 19 September, when Dundee Stars make the journey across the Irish Sea for a 7pm puck drop.
After starting the season with a win on the road, the Giants will now be looking to bring that momentum home.
Final score: Dundee Stars 1-4 Belfast Giants
Belfast scorers: Nicolas Guay, Mason Klee, Patrick Guay, Scott Conway.
