The Stena Line Belfast Giants claimed a Playoff Quarter Final 1st Leg win over the Fife Flyers on Saturday. The win sees the Giants take a 4-2 lead into Sunday’s 2nd Leg in Scotland, face-off 6:30pm.

The Flyers opened the scoring when Sebastien Thinel scored with a fine solo effort at 15:49.

After a period of sustained pressure on the Flyers goal, Steve Saviano equalised at 30:15 when David Rutherford picked out his teammate in space at the back post.


48 seconds later and it was 2-1 to the hosts. This time Blair Riley found Chris Higgins who who squeezed the puck past Shane Owen in the Fife goal.


Derrick Walser completed the scoring for the middle period when his slapshot from the blueline ripped into the Fife net at 36:16, assisted by David Rutherford and Jerome Leduc.


Chase Schaber pulled one back for the visitors at 44:30 with another unassisted goal for the Flyers.


Derrick Walser restored the Giants two goal advantage with his second goal of the game and another powerplay strike at 58:16. That goal ensured the Giants would take a two goal advantage into Sunday’s 2nd Leg in Fife.


The Giants and the Flyers travel to Scotland for Sunday’s 2nd Leg in Fife – face-off 6:30pm to determine who will advance to the Elite League’s Final Four weekend.
