The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Sheffield Steelers 3-1 on Saturday night in Belfast. Goals from Johner, Jarrett and Sylvestre gave the Giants a well deserved win at The SSE Arena. Both sides meet again in the Elite League on Sunday in Sheffield.
First Period Of Madness
The Giants got off to the best possible start when Dustin Johner, assisted by Darcy Murphy, fired the home side into an early lead at 0:32.
Cole Jarrett doubled the Giants lead at 8:22 with a wicked shot from the blueline, assisted by Jim Vandermeer and Sebastien Sylvestre.
Sylvestre then turned from provider to scorer 52 seconds later when he skated in on net, following a pass from Jonathan Ferland, and finished well past Mustukovs in the Steelers net.
Steelers Fight Back
The first period goalscoring was not done yet – as the Steelers got on the scoresheet at 10:56 through Levi Nelson, assisted by Matheson and Validix.
Defences On Top
Jackson Whistle and the Giants defence put on an impressive display during both the middle and final periods as the home side contained the Sheffield Steelers, giving up the solitary goal during the first period.
Raine Protects Teammates
Giants defenceman Kevin Raine got the Belfast crowd on their feet when he took exception to Andreas Valdix’s check from behind and earned a roughing penalty from Referee Darnell. The Steelers player picked up two 2 minute penalties for roughing and checking from behind as well as a 10 minute misconduct.
