Belfast City Hall is lit pink tonight — Wednesday 2 September 2026 — in recognition of the passing of Dolly Parton, as listed on Belfast City Council’s City Hall in lights calendar.
It is a simple, public gesture, and a fitting one for a city that already knew her kindness through books as much as through songs. As we wrote when the news broke, Dolly Parton died aged 80 on 25 August 2026; a cause of death was not publicly disclosed at the time.
For one evening, Donegall Square carries a little of that pink glow — a Belfast nod to the Queen of Country Music, and to the quieter work she did for children who needed a story in the post.
Pink for Dolly at City Hall
Council illuminations are reserved for selected occasions. On 2 September the building is scheduled in pink under the heading “Recognition of the passing of Dolly Parton.” Passers-by at dusk will see the familiar silhouette of City Hall washed in that colour — the same landmark that marks civic days, national days and causes close to home.
Drone footage of the pink lighting, shared by photographer and flyer @davidleedrone, captures the building from above as the colour settles over the dome and façades:

Remembering Dolly
When her family announced the news last month, tributes poured in from across music and far beyond. Dolly’s nephew Bryan Seaver shared a message through her official Instagram — the first public confirmation many of us saw:
Further remembrances followed on her channels, including this reel that many Belfast fans watched again as the City Hall lights went pink:
Books for Belfast children
Here, Dolly’s name has long meant more than chart hits. Through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, free age-appropriate books land each month with young children from birth to five — a gift rooted in her own father’s struggle with literacy, and one that reached Belfast with local partners.
Hagan Homes helped bring the Imagination Library to the city in partnership with Sure Start centres, and the scheme has since marked major milestones for Belfast families — including 50,000 books delivered to children across the city. That is the Belfast thread running through tonight’s pink: songs we know by heart, and stories still arriving through letterboxes.
Families interested in the Imagination Library in Northern Ireland can find details via local Sure Start partners and at the programme’s Northern Ireland pages.
A soft light for a giant of music
Dolly Parton leaves a catalogue that spans Jolene, 9 to 5, Coat of Many Colors and I Will Always Love You — and a reputation for generosity that outlasts any spotlight. Belfast City Hall going pink does not try to sum that up. It simply says the city noticed, and remembered.

Rest easy, Dolly. Belfast is thinking of you tonight.
