Review: The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole – The Mac, Belfast

Adrian Mole

The teenage years are tough for everyone and the relatable story of one young lad’s experience is currently being featured at the MAC in Belfast City Centre. “The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (Aged 13 3/4)” runs until October 7 and is definitely worth checking out.

Bruiser Theatre Company, celebrating its 20th anniversary, has brought Sue Townshend’s best-selling novel to life, and in a big way. According to Director Lisa May, Bruiser’s artistic policy is “minimal set for maximum impact” and that is certainly showcased in their adaptation of Adrian Mole.

Five local performers make up the cast and the choreography behind the production is really quite impressive, as is the focus and coordination from the performers. They work together seamlessly to move props and change the setting for each scene, while still bringing an incredible energy to the stage with the performances themselves.

The audience is brought back in time as young Adrian tells his tale about growing up in the 80’s. The story touches on some heavy themes like bullying and divorce, but manages to remain lighthearted and entertaining throughout. It’s as funny as it is charming.

Tickets for the show can be purchased through themaclive.com. Following its run at the MAC, The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (Aged 13 3/4) will tour across Ireland making stops in Ballina, Mullingar, Lisburn, Dublin, Armagh, and Derry/Londonderry.
